My enduring connection to Chaffee County started back in 1972. My enduring connection to Chaffee County started back in 1972. It began as a formative three-day acclimation expedition, floating the powerful Arkansas River from Granite to the Gorge, a journey that etched the raw beauty of the landscape into my memory. Those early experiences—nights spent under a canopy of stars while backpacking deep into the backcountry and the triumphant challenge of summiting a 14er—gave me my first, unforgettable taste of this rugged wilderness, exploring hidden dirt roads and historic settlements of Chaffee County.
Life then led me back to a "flyover state," where a passion for buying and revitalizing "fixer uppers" grew from a family hobby into a highly successful real estate career. I dedicated years to navigating the market, skillfully representing both buyers and sellers in hundreds of home transactions. Later, during a market downturn, I pivoted careers, returning to the classroom to teach high school math before eventually concluding my formal education career with a rewarding principalship at the middle school level.
Throughout these years away, the allure of the Rockies never faded. The "best parts" of teaching—June, July, and August—invariably found me trading the school halls for mountain air, returning to the valley for both summer adventures and winter fun. These consistent trips developed into a deep understanding of the unique infrastructure of this community, revealing the delicate balance between the pioneering ranching families who broke into this wild country and the burgeoning travel crowd that built a way for others to stay and enjoy it.
Ultimately, I realized a lifelong dream and planted permanent roots here before the COVID pandemic, taking a teaching job at our local high school. Now a full-time resident, I am fully immersed in the community I've cherished for over five decades, with a profound appreciation for the diverse and unique needs of a remote Colorado county that I now proudly call home.
